No Greater Friendship!!

The terrorist bomb exploded in an orphanage run by a missionary group in the small Assamese village. The missionaries and one or two children were killed outright and several more children were wounded, including one young girl, about eight years old. People from the village requested medical help from a neighbouring town that had radio contact with the Indian army. Finally, an army doctor, a Tamilian and a Malayan' nurse arrived in a jeep with only their medical kits. They realized that the girl was the most critically injured. Without quick action she would die of shock and loss of blood. A transfusion was imperative and a donor with a matching blood type was required. A quick test showed that neither of the army persons had the correct type but several of the uninjured orphans did.

The doctor and the nurse spoke some pidgin Assamese. Using that combination, together with much impromptu sign language, they tried to explain to their young, frightened audience that unless they could replace some of the girl's lost blood, she would certainly die. Then they asked if anyone would be willing to give blood !

Their request was met with wide-eyed silence. After several long moments, a small hand was slowly and waveringly raised.

"Oh, thank you," the nurse said in English. "What is your name?”

"Dev Kant", came the reply. Dev Kant was quickly laid on a pallet, his arm swabbed with alcohol and a needle inserted in his vein. Through this ordeal Dev Kant lay stiff and silent. After a moment he let out a shuddering sob, quickly covering his face with his free hand.

"Is it hurting Dev Kant?" the doctor asked.

Dev Kant shook his head but after a few moments another sob escaped and once more he tried to cover up his crying. Again the doctor asked him if the needle hurt and again Dev Kant shook his head. But now his occasional sobs gave way to a steady, silent crying, his eyes screwed tightly shut, his fist in his mouth to stifle his sobs.

The medical team was concerned. Something was obviously very wrong. At this point a nurse knowing Assamese arrived in another jeep to help. Seeing the little one's distress she spoke to him in Assamese, listened to his reply and answered him in a soothing voice. After a moment the patient stopped crying and looked questioningly at the Assamese speaking nurse. When she nodded, a look of great relief spread over his face.

Glancing up, the nurse said quietly to the doctor, "He thought he was dying. He misunderstood you. He thought you had asked him to give all his blood so the little girl could live.

""But why would he be willing to do that?" asked the doctor.

The Assamese speaking nurse repeated the question to the little boy who answered simply, "She's my friend."

AN OUTING TO MESSILA BEACH

Thursday, November 26th, marked another day to be kept in the good book of our memories. It was a very moody day, rain was drizzling and all were really lazy. No one felt like doing anything except lying under the cozy blanket and make it till the next sunrise. But then, we decided to take action just like it was planned and make it happen. The rain was no longer an obstacle for anyone. The day was chilly and the waters were cold. But it was a cool feeling to see the waves coming!! We decided to start off with some funfilled games. Two teams were formed, the captains being Roshan Philip and Joby Varghese. The first game was cricket! Pooja(Vivek's best half) was the backbone of Roshan's team for cricket which led to their victory and this boosted the spirts of their opponent Joby's team to a high level for the next game.

After the spirited game of cricket, it was the time to knock down people for football! There were a few hilarious moments with players pulling opponents, falling on top of each other and what not! Well, there are no words to describe how the game was played.

After the football match, everyone sat down to have some icecream and snacks. But no one could sit still for long. Next was a competitive match of throwball. The referees were Karthikeyan Ramachandran & Trithala Ramaswamy. Well, this game had its share of arguments about the rules and on getting points!! After many throws and falls, t he games ended around 9 pm. We all bid goodbye to messila and went to dine. The day ended with a dinner at Pizza Hut in Salmiya. In short, this day was nothing to regret of and those of you who couldn't be a part of this event , "Better Luck Next Time" .

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

The elevator to success is out of order.

You'll have to use the stairs..

one step at a time...

Stress Management

Here are some stress management tips that will help you achieve success over stress. You can experience stress relief on the job. There are certain signs of stress to be aware of while working and after you read this your family and co-workers will notice the change in your attitude because you know the stress management tips for stress relief while at work and at home.

Stress Management Tip #1. When making phone calls, as you pick up the phone and dial, take three slow deep breaths. Concentrate on pushing tension out of your lungs as you exhale.

Stress Management Tip #2. Sit down to eat. (Do not eat while standing or driving in your car) Focus on relaxing and enjoyable talk at lunchtime. If co-workers only insist on rehashing all of the negative stuff at work, insist on eating alone.

Stress Management Tip #3. On the way home from your business or your job, listen to enjoyable or relaxing music.

Stress Management Tip #4. Take a few minutes each day to thank God, in whatever form is consistent with your belief system, for the glorious sunrise. At sunset, do the same.

Stress Management Tip #5. Take a few minutes at work to think of people who may have harmed you in any way. Breathe deeply, relax, and push out all of the tension surrounding those thoughts. Fill your heart and your lungs with forgiveness for the person or persons who have harmed you. Wish for them the same success and happiness you wish for yourself.

Stress Management Tip #6. Live today as if it where your last day. Make your last day, your best day!

Now that we understand stress management if we desire to transform our way of life we must begin to look within. Now is the time to break free from the chains of fear, doubt, stress, poverty and unhappiness and receive the Master Key to unlock the door your success, happiness, and wealth and begin your journey on the Pathway to Prosperity.

Life's problems are something like this.
Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK.

Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache.
Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything.

It's important to think of the challenges or problems in your life, But EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to 'PUT THEM DOWN' at the end of every day before you go to sleep…

The Woman In Your Life

Tomorrow you may get a working woman, but you should marry her with these facts as well.
Here is a girl, who is as much educated as you are; Who is earning almost as much as you do;
One, who has dreams and aspirations just as you have because she is as human as you are;
One, who has never entered the kitchen in her life just like you or your Sister haven't, as she was busy in studies and competing in a system that gives no special concession to girls for their culinary achievements
One, who has lived and loved her parents & brothers & sisters, almost as much as you do for 20-25 years of her life;
One, who has bravely agreed to leave behind all that, her home, people who love her, to adopt your home, your family, your ways and even your family ,name
One, who is somehow expected to be a master-chef from day #1, while you sleep oblivious to her predicament in her new circumstances, environment and that kitchen
One, who is expected to make the tea, first thing in the morning and cook food at the end of the day, even if she is as tired as you are, maybe more, and yet never ever expected to complain; to be a servant, a cook, a mother, a wife, even if she doesn't want to; and is learning just like you are as to what you want from her; and is clumsy and sloppy at times and knows that you won't like it if she is too demanding, or if she learns faster than you;
One, who has her own set of friends, and that includes boys and even men at her workplace too, those, who she knows from school days and yet is willing to put all that on the back-burners to avoid your irrational jealousy, unnecessary competition and your inherent insecurities;
Yes, she can drink and dance just as well as you can, but won't, simply Because you won't like it, even though you say otherwise
One, who can be late from work once in a while when deadlines, just like yours, are to be met;
One, who is doing her level best and wants to make this most important, relationship in her entire life a grand success, if you just help her some and trust her;
One, who just wants one thing from you, as you are the only one she knows in your entire house - your unstinted support, your sensitivities and most importantly - your understanding, or love, if you may call it.
But not many guys understand this......
Please appreciate "HER"

Picnic

A change of ambiance provides picnics a touch of magic; and maybe that is what picnics are all about, even if the scenery merely shifts from the laptop to your backyard. The venue has not been decided and we need your valuable suggestions of an ideal place for such an outing. This is scheduled for the end of November and we expect the same coordination and support by each & all.

LEND A HELPING HAND

This thought has finally adapted a new mode in HCC. HCC as a team has come up with an idea of being a helping hand to the needful by arranging some collection which can be used for charity.

Each & every one of us has a heart to help but they are not on a daily basis, it’s either when you get a salary hike or any birthdays or special occasions like those. When many hands join together , it could bring great joy to someone out there with nothing to hope for.

Hence we have decided to arrange a collection at the end of every month and this is not a compulsory act. Only those with a willing heart can come forward & make this idea a success. We will not barge into your rooms and ask, those of you who wish to help can donate some amount to Mr. Roshan Roy Philip at the end of every month.The amount thus collected will be used for charity.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. . . As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

Are We Writers or Typers?

By Vivek Nair
(Continued...)

Though every article/blog or anything has been made out to be a "write"-up, isn't it really just a type-up? The other day I was trying to write a letter (snail-mail) to someone and I found that after about 4 lines of my neat, semi-cursive hand, my wrist had an annoying ache which I've never had in my days of writing 20+ pages of my Pondicherry University answer sheets. And on closer inspection, my handwriting was progressively deteriorating.

After just 4 lines, it was shocking how used to typing I was now, that my hands refused to hold a pen long enough to complete a letter. If after over 20 years of actual writing, the past few have obliterated the need to, I can't imagine how our next generation is going to be... And to think I was big on ink-pens and had a collection boasting Sheaffer, Waterman, Parker and what not. Good that I gave it all back to dad who bought them for me in the first place. At least I know that the generation before us are still used to scribbling on notepads and writing out lists and sending out postal letters.

In fact my bro n I used to go stationary-shopping in Cochin and bought all sorts of fancy notebooks (the paper variety and not the trendy laptops) and what not. And that's how I started writing a journal in the first place. And remember those 4-line books? The ones that were the practice books for cursive writing? I won't be surprised if they are out of production by the time the next generation goes to school. Some things are best left unchanged... and writing particularly has a big, old-world charm to it, something the future isn't going to appreciate much. Sigh!

Fun Unlimited

(Continued...)

Mesmerizing breathtaking rides—doesn’t it say the whole story? A number of rides which puts you in chaos with your own self left behind no choice but 2 have your seat belt fastened and enjoying each & every moment of all the rides be it big or small. All were in the best of their spirits.

At the end of the day, it was worth the time & money spent and that’s why maybe people call it "Entertainment city".

Luck Favors Abbassiya 11

(Continued...)

Elected to Bat, Honeywell Kuwait, under the captaincy of Mr.Hanif Khan scored an astonishing 159 runs in the allotted 20 over’s, losing 4 of their wickets making it a difficult target for the Abbassiya 11 to chase. The elegantly place placed and timed shots of the captain, particularly through the covers, helped Honeywell Kuwait in attaining this gigantic score. The captain scored 72 runs in his innings.
Abbasiya team, under the captaincy of Mr.Joby Varghese displayed a winning performance in chasing the score of Honeywell. The strength of the Abbasiya team and all rounder, Mr.Kannan proved himself yet again, in leading the team to victory by a very small margin. Kann
an scored a steady 60 runs in his innings.
The wrong field setting and lack of proper fielding by the Honeywell team aided to the victory of Abbasiya 11. Abbasiya 11 attained the score of 160 runs in 18.5 overs, loosing 7 wickets.

Weighing heavily on the Honeywell teams minds will be Abbassiya 11’s recent victory over them in an attritional one-day played in Fahaheel. Honeywell Kuwait is all set to take on Abbasiya 11 in a challenge match, for which the date is yet to be scheduled.

ONAM CELEBRATIONS!

Onam - The day of recognition of divinity in man.

Though its spirits are not as high as they were in the past we still could make it a memorable event. After all Onam is the celebration of happiness & togetherness. A small joint venture organized at Honeywell accomadation,Mangaf(KU100) brought out the true festive person in each of us.

The celebration kicked off with the special ‘Ona pattu’(Onam song) lead by Mr. Iype Puthoopally in which all the people gathered without any discrimination. A spectacular game of tricky questions was hosted by Mr. James. That wasn’t it, how can we miss the traditional games played during this time of the year and so a ‘Vadam vali’(Tug of war) was organized.

Then, there was Onasadhya(the Onam feast),which was the main attraction which drew each and everyone to this wonderful occasion. Several traditional food items like aviyal,kaalan and olan were sponsored by the members themselves and the lunch was grand.

Ostentatious or sober celebration, Onam is one of the festivals that has made its place in the heart of each Non Resident Indian!

The 86.4k Factor

There is something in our lives, which is common to all and never stays still. For some it seems to run and for others it seems to drag on. I came across a good article which gives its importance in an interesting way.

“Almost every one of us wants to be rich. So, let’s suppose that your bank account was credited with Rs 86,400 (86.4k for short!) every midnight with the pre-condition that if you didn’t spend the entire amount of money the same day within 24 hours, then the unused balance would just ‘vanish’ at 11:59 pm that night. And at 12:00 am, a fresh remittance of Rs.86.4k is added to your account, only for the unused amount to ‘evaporate’ again that night at 11:59 pm. Then, what would you do? Wouldn’t we all try to spend all the money of Rs.86.4k effectively?”

Yes, I know our answer would be yes. But then, isn't it this just a hypothetical situation? Guess what, you are mistaken. Every day our lives are being credited with 86400 seconds. It is up to us to ensure that we utilise it fully. Every single day, so many seconds are being wasted away and then when a new day begins, a fresh set of 86.4k is given to us. To each person in this world, this abundant, wealth is given uniformly. And how much of it do we take for granted and simple squander.

Times have changed and we are all part of a rat race to take control of the things beyond our reach. If you step back and think, you'll know you are running this race because you too are mismanaging the world's most democratic resource-Time. The 86.4k factor is the only constant in our lives. And now, since we know we are all on the same level, its time that we started to work at achieving our dreams using 86.4k as our sole capital.

Have we ever viewed time through this angle? All of us know how to use our wealth in the most effective manner. But there is something more valuable than money that is slipping away from us. Let us not live as though we will live for ever. Our time is limited and one day there might be nothing to look back on. People like Gandhi and Abdul Kalaam too have had or has only the same amount of time but the way they used it made all the difference in their lives. It is human to err but we do not need to repeat the same error again and again. Each second is valuable only for that second and then it's never coming back to us. At the same time, when we achieve something with our abilities, however small it might be, we must learn to be contect with it and then try to put in more effort to reach the next step. Some of us are always in pursue for happiness that we have reached a stage where nothing in this world can make us smile. So, let us invest this invaluable resource that we have, wisely and profit from life.

"Cherish each moment that comes your way

Arise to each dawn with a plan

Live each day to its fullest

For we in this world are just for a while..."
